FREYA VOS – SHE FOUND WHAT MAKES HER WHISTLE, AT IMMAC!

FREYA VOS – SHE FOUND WHAT MAKES HER WHISTLE, AT IMMAC!

Name: Freya Vos

Hometown: Kelowna

Did you attend Immaculata as a student: YES!! Class of 1998

Current role:  I teach Biology 11 & 12, Chemistry 11 & 12… next year Horticulture 11!

How long have you been at Immaculata?

If I am correct it has been 15 wonderful years.  Plus, the time I spent here as a student.

Why do you choose to work at Immaculata?

I originally chose Immaculata because it felt like home.  I had a wonderful experience with the school as a student so when I pursued education as a profession I knew it had to be at Immaculata.  I have stayed so many years because it has become my family.  I love the sense of community and rich tradition of our school.

What about Immaculata are you most proud of?

I’m so proud of what our students accomplish.  From athletics to arts to academics they are so very talented.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the relationships I have with my students and coworkers.  When I started teaching I learned very early that what you teach students is important but how you make them feel is so much MORE important.  I always try to keep that in mind.  Recently one of my boys brought home a school project that said “In a world where you can be anything, be kind!”  I keep it on our fridge to remind myself everyday.

What goals do you have for our students?

That every student can find their passion… and if it happens to be science that’s amazing!  My dad, once said that if you stop whistling on the way to work then you should find a new job.  So my hope for all of our students is that they find what makes them whistle.

What life lessons do you hope to convey to our students?

That high school is just a relatively small step in the big picture of their lives.  Sometimes as teenagers they lose perspective.  In a few years, they won’t remember their prom dress or that exam they did poorly on.

What is the best lesson you’ve learned from a student?

I’ve had to privilege to assist with many sports teams since I started teaching (basketball, volleyball, and now soccer).  In those times away from school, I have learned the true value of teamwork and the rewards of hard work.  The Senior Girls Soccer team won provincials this year.  These fierce young women are a huge inspiration to me!

What were you like in high school?

I was nerdy.  There I said it!  I worked really hard on my academics and was successful.  I made some lifelong friends that I still hangout with all the time.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love traveling and camping with my family, wine touring with my sisters, and playing for the Divas (my ladies league soccer team).

Who are the most important people in your life?

Jason my husband – he holds our family together and he is an amazing dad to our two our incredible sons Carter and Callum.  Also my sisters, Rachel and Heather, they’re my best friends!

FREYA - FYI:

I love to garden; I sometimes name my plants!  Gardening helps me relieve stress and I am very excited to share this passion with our students next year in horticulture.
